Firewall Update on Version 5 Servers

On 7/20/2008 we will be running a major firewall update on all Version 5 systems. Users on the Version 4 systems will not be affected in this update. The update will consist of a change to our firewall handling procedures.

Currently, if you attempt to log in more than 5 times in a row with failed information, it will permanently block your IP number from the system. You then must contact support to remove the IP number from the block.

The new implementation will automatically drop the block after 15 minutes. We have also increased the number of failed attempts to 10 failed attempts on POP3, SMTP, FTP and cPanel Logins attempts.

After 15 minutes, the IP number will automatically be removed and you will once again be able to attempt to log into the system. Be aware however, if you have 4 temporary blocks, it will add your IP number to a permanent block. Basically, this gives you a total of 40 login attempts. If you don't know your password and have tried 40 times to log in, you really need to contact support, or reset your passwords inside the billing system at http://billing.handsonwebhosting.com

New Mini-Commerce Hosting Package launched!

Hands-on Web Hosting announces the introduction of a new Hosting Plan Mini Commerce

The new Hosting Package, retailing as low as $22/month, will allow you to install an SSL Certificate and have hosting on a Dedicated IP Number. For more than five years, Hands-on Web Hosting has only allowed the Dedicated IP Numbers to be installed on an eCommerce package as they are on dedicated machines. We're proud to announce that you can now reduce your monthly hosting fees from $36.95/month to $22/month and retain many of the same features as the eCommerce Package.

The advantage is lower pricing, while the disadvantage really does not affect many of our customers. The disk space and bandwidth on the Mini Commerce Hosting Plan is less than our eCommerce Package, but most of our customers use less than 10% of the space and bandwidth that we allot to them. So even by downgrading, you would still have more disk space and bandwdith than you know what to do with it.

Some of the key differences are as follows:

eCommerce Hosting
Disk Space: 10,000 MB
Bandwidth: 80,000 MB
Additional Domains: 30
POP3 Email Addresses: 200
MySQL Databases: 50

Mini Commerce Hosting
Disk Space: 3,000 MB
Bandwidth: 25,000 MB
Additional Domains: 10
POP3 Email Addresses: 100
MySQL Databases: 20
Automated Backups: Every 4 hours

A HUGE advantage is the introduction of Continuous Backups. Your site will be backed up every 4 hours automatically, and allow you to restore your site from previous days should you accidentally erase a file, change a file or corrupt a database.

This new Hosting package has not yet been announced on our main page. We will introduce the package to the general public later this week (or next week). Meanwhile, you get an opportunity to upgrade/downgrade to the new package and get the jump on the general public!!

I'm sure you have questions regarding the new package, and we're here to answer them for you. Please contact any of our support staff and we'll be happy to answer them for you. Also, to upgrade or downgrade your hosting package you must submit a ticket request to our support staff. We will shortly introduce the automated upgrade/downgrade for this package, but at this time you must submit a ticket.

Automated Backups - FREE Hands-on Backup Solution

Introducing Continuous Backups. Every 4 hours we'll backup your site and make a restore point for you. You can go into the cPanel at any time and restore a file, or multiple files. So even if you delete the file on your site, you can grab a copy from the backup program. The backup system will retain up to 7 backups of your site and can restore for you with a few clicks of a button.

The Continuous Backups are only available on PHP5 systems and not available on PHP4 systems. If you're not on a PHP5 system, please contact Support to find out what is involved in moving your site to the new system. Usually it's just a matter of a brief outage while your site is copied from one server to another.

PHP / MySQL / Apache Software Upgrades

The following major software distributions have been sentenced to death. Actually, they've been near the end for quite some time, but finally this year the hammer dropped and these three mighty giants will be put to rest after 2008 Summer.

Hands-on has scheduled our final days with this software to last through the end of September 2008, however as of October 1st 2008, the software will no longer function. Servers will be upgraded to the newer versions, which may result in some programs not working.

PCI Compliance already has some problems with these versions as they are no longer being updated. If you are failing PCI Scans, please notify us and we will move you to a compatible machine.

The main languages affected are:
PHP 4.x
MySQL 4.x
Apache 1.3.x

Some programs such as X-Cart 4.0.x and some older vBulletin software will not work on MySQL 5 without patches and upgrades. You will need to contact your script/software vendors to verify that the programs you are running will run on the new platforms:

PHP 5.2.x
Mysql 5.0.x
Apache 2.2.x

If you need patch/upgrade assistance, we recomend NetVisionWeb as they've been very good to us on our own patches and upgrades. More information on them can be found at http://www.netvisionweb.com

New Support & Billing System

On Janaury 24th 2008, Hands-on Web Hosting launched the new Billing and Support System.
Similar to to the previous billing system (ModernBill 4.x), the new system (WHMCS) uses your email address and password to log into the system at http://billing.handsonwebhosting.com

The new system also has the support center integrated so that you can now submit tickets directly from the same system - no need to seperate logins.

Over the next few days we will be migrating Knowledgebase articles etc to the new system.

Please note, your OLD tickets with Hands-on will not be accesible. We do have them currently archived, but you will not be able to submit new tickets on the old system - only existing OPEN tickets will be addressed through the old system. We estimate that system to be completely shut down by the end of this month.

If you have any questions, please open a ticket with us. We'd love to hear your feedback on the new system too!
